Pitch Lake's outreach work
At Pitch Lake we believe that theatre is a powerful force for change and can be used in a community setting to improve the mental well being of its members whilst tackling hard hitting issues.
Our current outreach focus is the devastating loss of life that far too many of our young people are suffering at the moment through nationwide knife and gun crime. Using Michelle Inniss' play They Know Not What They Do, we have developed workshops in our local community and throughout London that focus on this situation.
They Know Not What They Do focuses on how one fateful action affects the lives of so many people. The young people in our workshops look at the character of 17 year old DeAngelo and his fateful action of stabbing 18 year old Christopher, looking at his life before prison and whilst he is in prison and the people in his life his action has affected.
The play also looks at how DeAngelo arrived at this place and how his action affects not only himself and his family or the victim and the victim’s family but also the lives of both of the teenager’s friends, the community they both lived in and the society as a whole. The workshops follow DeAngelo’s story, looking at the choices he made and their consequences. We also teach the 4 R’s – Reassurance, Responsibility, Risks and Resilience of knife carrying prevention, as prescribed by the Scottish Government’s No Knives, Better Lives Campaign.
Through drama and script work each young person is given the opportunity to create their own positive choices and take control of their decision making in order to live their best lives.
We have previously worked with such groups as the Hammersmith Youth Offending Team.
Contact us to discuss your outreach idea or to find out more about the bespoke workshops what we could offer your community/organisation.
